The medieval canal Oude Gracht (litt. Old Canal) is the best-known of Utrecht’s canals. It passes right through the city center. Parts of the canal were created around 1000 years ago.

The wharfs at water level are typical for this canal. Bars and restaurants nowadays line the canal at water level, at least in the city centre.
