A photo impression of the shopping area in downtown Utrecht. A few of these shop fronts are set to disappear, others are selected because they are a bit different from the average high street store.

Hoog Catharijne logo

Logo of the Hoog Catharijne mall, above a side entrance. This logo will probably disappear soon, as part of a major renovation of both the mall and the surrounding area. The area and mall are changing beyond recognition.

Broese book shop, Utrecht

Selexyz Broese, one of the largest bookshops in the country. The parent company, Selexyz, is bankrupt and their book shops are taken over. They will soon be merged with the De Slegte chain. This shop front will soon either disappear or look completely different.

Music Hall

Music Hall

Downtown Utrecht is currently a big mess, and it has been like that for several years. There are many large renovation and building projects going on: The train station and the bus and tram terminals are completely revamped, and so are the mall, the Vredenburg music hall and the Jaarbeurs exhibition halls and convention center. Utrecht will have a newly built town hall right next to the train station. Many new shops, offices and apartments are built around the mall. The Catharijnesingel, once a canal but a major road for as long as I can remember, is closed now and will soon be a canal again.

Bridge over the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal

Bridge over the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal

I was hiking early in the morning with my camera in the Utrecht region and had to cross the Amsterdam-Rhine canal, from the town Nieuwegein on the west bank into Utrecht on the east bank. Of course, I stopped for a moment to take some photos.

The bridge is the Jutphasebrug (Jutphaas Bridge) and was constructed in 1936.

No snow or ice yet, here in Holland. But I found some winter scenes in my photo archive, from previous winters. Only the third photo (of a tree in heavy fog) is new. All photos were taken in the Utrecht region in The Netherlands.

Today on Photo Friday: Four photos of the river Vecht, a Dutch river in the Utrecht region. I took these photos on a photo walk on the east bank of the river, from the village Nieuwersluis via Breukelen to Maarssen.

From top to bottom you can see a villa, half hidden under large trees; a building site, perfectly mirrored in the blue water of the Vecht; another villa; the village Breukelen.

More photos of the Vecht on my daily photo blog: a photo of the village Nieuwersluis, a heron on the river bank, and a view of the river Vecht.

Oude Gracht, Utrecht

The medieval canal Oude Gracht (litt. Old Canal) is the best-known of Utrecht’s canals. It passes right through the city center. Parts of the canal were created around 1000 years ago.

The wharfs at water level are typical for this canal. Bars and restaurants nowadays line the canal at water level, at least in the city centre.

Last week in Photo Friday we had a few photos of the rabbit statue in Utrecht. Utrecht has another statue of a famous rabbit: Miffy. Miffy (Nijntje in Dutch) is a creation of Utrecht resident Dick Bruna. In their honour, a small square in Utrecht, on the edge of the down-town area, is named Nijntje Pleintje (Miffy Square). On the square is a small statue of Miffy.
